The idea behind this series of illustrations began with watching The Chronology of Water by Kristen Stewart — a film I saw in June, in a sweltering Milan, that sparked in me the desire to watch only films with swimming pools, in a vain attempt to cool down by osmosis. As I explored the theme, however, I realised that in cinema the swimming pool is almost never a place of leisure and relaxation. More often than not, it is quite the opposite: a space of introspection, alienation, lost or rediscovered memory. And, sometimes, of tragedy.
Pools are not all alike — each has its own aesthetic, its own shape and edges: there is the run-down public pool of Deep End, the stagnant one of La Ciénaga, and the bourgeois one of The Graduate. In The Swimmer we see no fewer than ten different pools, each with its own character and each the setting for a different encounter.
As an illustrator, depicting these pools was not only an escape from the city and an attempt to immerse myself in another reality, as cinema has always invited me to do. It was also, in part, an escape from myself. Unlike the illustrations I have made in recent years — on display in the other section of the exhibition — I chose a more instinctive and spontaneous drawing style. Changing technique, tools and method felt exactly like diving into a new dimension, leaving my old self at the poolside and resurfacing with a fresh vision.

L’idea di questa serie di illustrazioni nasce dalla visione di La cronologia dell’acqua di Kristen Stewart, un film che, visto a giugno in una Milano torrida, ha innescato in me il desiderio di guardare solo film con piscine, nel vano tentativo di rinfrescarmi per osmosi. Approfondendo il tema mi sono resa conto però di come al cinema la piscina non sia quasi mai un luogo di svago e relax. Il più delle volte è, al contrario, il luogo dell’introspezione, dell’alienazione, della memoria perduta o ritrovata. E, a volte, della tragedia.
E le piscine non sono tutte uguali, ognuna ha la sua estetica, la sua forma e il suo contorno: c’è la piscina pubblica in ristrutturazione di Deep End, quella stagnante di La Ciénaga e quella borghese di The Graduate. In The Swimmer ne vediamo addirittura 10 differenti, ognuna con le sue particolarità e ognuna teatro di un diverso incontro.
Come illustratrice, rappresentare queste piscine non è stata solo una via di fuga dalla città e un tentativo di immergermi in un’altra realtà, come da sempre mi spinge a fare il cinema. È stata in parte anche una fuga da me stessa. Infatti, a differenza delle illustrazioni che ho realizzato negli ultimi anni e che sono esposte nell’altra sezione della mostra, ho deciso di utilizzare uno stile di disegno più istintivo e veloce. Cambiare tecnica, strumenti e metodo è stato esattamente come tuffarmi in una nuova dimensione, lasciando me stessa a bordo piscina per poi riemergere con una nuova visione.
Ho realizzato 15 locandine per 15 film, esposti al Palazzo del cinema Anteo di Milano dal 15 luglio al 12 settembre 2026.
